As a result of a survey concerned with educational support for anticoagulation nurses sent out to CLOT members, Rebecca Brown developed a course for nurse specialists. The survey demonstrated that many nurses in the field had not received any formal education before commencing their new posts. It was clear from the replies received that the majority were unhappy with this situation and were keen to see a course developed to meet their needs.
With this information Rebecca approached the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield and with the help of Carol Law senior lecturer in post graduate nursing started the first course in anticoagulation nursing in the country. The first course began in September 2001 and was a huge success with students attending from as far apart as the Island of Wight and Scotland. The tenth course has now been completed which means that 200 students have now received their certificates of attendance from the University. Those students who wanted to go further and undertake an assignment have now completed their work and have gained points through the CPD structure that they have been able to put towards their Diploma level 2, Degree level 3, or Masters; according to their needs.
It is extremely important for anticoagulation nursing that there is this nationally recognised course. It will enhance the recognition of anticoagulation and out patient DVT nursing.
There is only one course running this year (2008), and it starts in April.
